sample: [On making salt.] About 3 hours before the Evaporation is finish't, i.e. before they begin to draw (at the fift filling) they clarify the brine with the white of one Egg, which being broken into a bucket, and mixt both with cold, and some of hot brine; by the motion of the hand is brought into a Lather, and gently sprinkled all over the Pan; Where upon there presently appears a scum, that thickens by degrees as the impurities rise, which thus catch't and detained, I suppose by the viscosity of the white of the Egg; before the brine boiles again, is drawn over the side of the Pan with a thin oblong square board, fixt to a staff or handle, call'd a Loot or Lute.
